Dear 2nd Grade Families,
We are starting to read, The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe. We look forward to our field trip on December 14 to the Old Creamery Theater in Amana to see the story in action. Continue to read at home. Our next FAST testing for the fluency of reading will be at the end of January. We have started timing ourselves on stories at school to increase our fluency, but the more reading, the better we will get. Our next unit in math will be working with money. So, feel free to have your child practice counting the money in your purse, your pocket, your car, or money found in the couch! We have gotten pretty good at making amounts on our Daily Openers, but we haven’t practiced with real coins very much. I have to be honest, I set pretty high standards for my students, regardless, of the grade they are in. These 2nd graders continue to impress me with continuing to meet and exceed those expectations. For example: quiet during work time, following hallway expectations, doing better at listening the first time, following our routines, not distracting others, and much more. These probably seem like easy, normal school expectations, but on a daily basis, it is so easy to talk with your friend, ignore the teacher, or do what you want instead of work. I encourage you to ask your child about how they are doing. Now, I admit, we are not all perfect, all of the time, but we have a great class to be in!!! I’m also sending home a new December calendar for their book in a bag. Be sure to remind them to turn in any old calendar that they might still have. tanyawaltersclassroom.weebly.com ---I am continuing to add math and reading sites, so please keep checking it out! I just added spelling lists to it as well! ---Keep checking and signing your child’s planner. If you haven’t seen it yet, ask them about it! ---Our school collects box tops, so if you notice any of these on canned foods, boxed food, cereal, tissues, anything, please save them and send with your child to school. ---Book Bags can be returned each morning if your child is ready for a new book. Keep filling out the calendar and tracking your reading each day/night! If your child still has an orange October calendar, remind them to get a new light orange November calendar from me! I look forward to next week! Mrs. Walters [email protected] If you have not returned your form for this: remember to do so!!!! WEWALK was an amazing success and as a school we reached our goal for fundraising. The reward set for reaching the goal was the opportunity for students to watch the movie The Incredibles. We would like more students to have the opportunity to participate in our reward this year, so we will be having the movie on the November 28th early out. On November 28th, we will be offering all students the opportunity to watch The Incredibles in the gym after school. The movie will start at 1:30pm. We are asking that families do not attend this event with their other children, due to the possibility of the gym filling up. Students will be provided a snack by WETAP and then will be expected to stay in the gym to watch the entirety of the movie. We will plan for the movie to finish around 3:30. We will have staff and volunteers organized by WETAP in the gym the entire time. We will be sending a permission slip home on Friday. In order for your child to be allowed to attend the movie, you will need to fill out the permission slip including after movie plans. The earlier you can return the permission slip the better so we can account for the number of snacks we will need. We will also attach a permission slip to tomorrow's ES office news. We would like pick up to go as smooth as possible so we will plan to organize pick up as we do after school. · If your child will be picked up in the car line we will put them in grade level lines and ask you pull into the parking lot as you do for pick up after school. Please do not get out of your car. Pull up to the curb and we will call students to the cars once they are along the curb. · If your child will be picked up by you please either park in a parking spot or by you walking to school, we ask you walk to the front of the school wait outside the school by the front doors and we will walk them outside to you as soon as the movie is over. · If you would like your child to walk home we will have them go out the front doors and walk in the direction they need to. (We will have crossing guard at the crosswalk on 5th Ave.) This is a big endeavor to take on after school so we will not allow students to call home on the day of the movie to see if they can attend. If you do not return your permission slip, your child will not be allowed to stay. Thank you to WETAP and the entire school community for the amazing support you have shown to our students and staff! Please let me know if you have any questions. Kate Stanton, Principal

Mrs. Walters [email protected] Dear 2nd Grade Families,
We completed our first timed test on Monday with addition up to 10. We will slowly incorporate practice and games that will help with our fluency. Online, we have started using MathFactPro, if your child remembers their login information, they are definitely welcome to practice this at home! Be sure to start sending coats and appropriate clothing to school Students will still be going outside for recess and we want them to be prepared for the cold!!! Quite a few book orders went home, be sure if you want to order, bring them back to school as soon as possible. I will not set a due date, but will just order once you bring them in. You are also able to order these online and we will still receive them in the classroom! tanyawaltersclassroom.weebly.com ---I am continuing to add math and reading sites, so please keep checking it out!
