Dear 2nd Grade Families, We started 2-digit subtraction with borrowing this week. It is pretty difficult, so feel free to practice this with your child! In social studies, each student is researching his/her own state. They are learning a lot of fun facts about their state! Our mealworms had an interesting change over the past few days…ask your child about this! And our caterpillars have changed into butterflies!! We had a review week this week, and due to missing Thursday, this will continue into next week a bit. Every student has worked hard on their review materials. During this time, they have taken numerous assessments to get ready for conferences and report cards. The 100th day of school is now this coming Monday. Conference slips will also go home today. Please let me know if the time or day doesn’t work. I tried to meet the needs of requests and scheduling with other teachers to account for siblings in the school. tanyawaltersclassroom.weebly.com ---I am continuing to add math and reading sites, so please keep checking it out! I just added spelling lists to it as well! ---Keep checking and signing your child’s planner. If you haven’t seen it yet, ask them about it! ---Our school collects box tops, so if you notice any of these on canned foods, boxed food, cereal, tissues, anything, please save them and send with your child to school. ---Book Bags can be returned each morning if your child is ready for a new book. A review went home before this break and we worked on a review today. Feel free to practice problems like these at home over the weekend. Our test will probably be on Tuesday of next week. THEN, we will start subtraction. In social studies, each student is researching his/her own state. They are learning a lot of fun facts about their state! Our mealworms had an interesting change over the past few days…ask your child about this! And our caterpillars have changed into butterflies!! Due to missing so much school, we did not take our spelling test today. I’m thinking we will take it on Tuesday of next week as well. There will be no new spelling words next week, but rather we will be having a review/testing week. Here are the spelling words to practice over the weekend: happy, baby, lucky, safely, lately, yummy, explode, thump, wiping, grasp, gloat, sigh, slumping, socket, carry, sure. tanyawaltersclassroom.weebly.com ---I am continuing to add math and reading sites, so please keep checking it out! Dear 2nd Grade Families, Winter is here, in some strange way; please send your child with appropriate winter gear for outside recess! Next week is our FAST testing. I will listen to each child read 3 different stories. This will show me their growth over the school year, thus far. We will continue our fluency at school and keep up the hard work of reading at home! I look forward to seeing our growth! We are working on 2-digit addition in math. Everyone seems to be picking it up pretty quickly! Test your child and see how they are doing! In social studies, we have worked through communities and map skills. We will start to discuss Iowa and the United States. Science will be starting up with some additional creatures joining our room!! Happy Friday! If you have any festive clothes: a Christmas/holiday shirt or sweater, anything red, green, silver, gold, etc., I would love if you could wear it either this Friday or next week on Monday or Tuesday. Last day to bring in change is tomorrow!!!! Thanks, Mrs. Walters Dear 2nd Grade Families,
It is almost our holiday break! We will continue counting money and will test on Tuesday or Wednesday of next week. There will be no new spelling words for next week. We will be discussing communities, map skills, our state of Iowa and our country of the United States of America. Feel free to bring in a stocking to hang in the room. With our elf on the shelf and his doings, our room is becoming more and more festive! We are going to be working on a couple of surprises next week, if you could have your child wear festive clothes on Monday or Tuesday, that would be great. (red, green, silver, gold, holiday clothes, etc.) Please let me know if there is a day your child will be gone next week. That way I can plan accordingly to send home holiday stuff, over-break activities, and new book in a bag calendar. tanyawaltersclassroom.weebly.com ---I am continuing to add math and reading sites, so please keep checking it out! We are starting to read, The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe. We look forward to our field trip on December 14 to the Old Creamery Theater in Amana to see the story in action. Continue to read at home. Our next FAST testing for the fluency of reading will be at the end of January. We have started timing ourselves on stories at school to increase our fluency, but the more reading, the better we will get. Our next unit in math will be working with money. So, feel free to have your child practice counting the money in your purse, your pocket, your car, or money found in the couch! We have gotten pretty good at making amounts on our Daily Openers, but we haven’t practiced with real coins very much. I have to be honest, I set pretty high standards for my students, regardless, of the grade they are in. These 2nd graders continue to impress me with continuing to meet and exceed those expectations. For example: quiet during work time, following hallway expectations, doing better at listening the first time, following our routines, not distracting others, and much more. These probably seem like easy, normal school expectations, but on a daily basis, it is so easy to talk with your friend, ignore the teacher, or do what you want instead of work. I encourage you to ask your child about how they are doing. Now, I admit, we are not all perfect, all of the time, but we have a great class to be in!!! I’m also sending home a new December calendar for their book in a bag. Be sure to remind them to turn in any old calendar that they might still have. tanyawaltersclassroom.weebly.com ---I am continuing to add math and reading sites, so please keep checking it out!
